Group: Ngā Ringa o Te Auaunga Friends of Oakley Creek

On World Wetlands Day (02 Feb) we’ll be kicking off our 2024 events schedule with a guided wetland walk with our favourite guest presenter, Ben Goodwin. Ben is a self-taught botanist with a passion for hidden native habitats and his talks are always entertaining and packed with fascinating factoids. Unbeknownst to many people, Te Wai Ōrea / Western Springs Park contains small and fragile remnants of a range of ecosystem types, including a patch of wetland which Ben will guide us around.

Numbers are limited to 18, so please ensure you Book on Eventfinda as soon as possible to reserve your place.

Note: There will be an extra 15 minutes at the end of the walk for Q & A.

Getting there: Walk, scoot, ride or catch the bus, but if you need to drive you’ll find parking on Great Nth Road and in the car park by the Western Springs Garden Community Hall.

Consider bringing: Sturdy closed boots or shoes, long sleeves (in case of mozzies), sun hat, sunblock, water bottle (although there are water fountains in the park).

By popular demand Urban Ark will be running an in-person Trap.NZ workshop. If you know anyone in your group who uses Trap.NZ or might be persuaded to take on a role keeping catch data up to date, then ask them to join us.

When Tuesday 13 February 2024 6.30–8.30pm

Where Upstairs at Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre - 990 Great North Road.

Who Anyone who uses Trap.NZ, would like to use Trap.NZ more effectively or just wants to learn about the platform.

We know that lots of people use Trap.NZ to keep track of trap locations and catches. We also know it isn’t always the most intuitive platform to use so we’d like to do some demystifying and show also extend the knowledge of what it can do. There will also be a focus on best practice for using Trap.NZ within the sort of groups which operate in the Urban Ark area.

This workshop will cover some of the same ground as the online sessions run by TrapNZ (see below). We’ll try to focus on stuff that’s of specific interest to groups in our area, and leave plenty of time for Q&A. we definitely want you to join us, but if you’ve got the time and inclination it would definitely be worth also attending an online session.

Well kick off with a brief opportunity to share some thoughts. Tell us:

• Something disheartening you learnt / saw / heard about New Zealands ecology over the holiday break
• Something your group would like to achieve in 2024

Well then have a discussion around the results of the survey we sent around to group leaders towards the end of last year. if you haven’t filled it in ans still wnat to, you can here.
