Raranga (weaving) Ecology workshop

Saturday 12 October 2024, 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Join Rewa Grimsdale (Te Atiawa, Ngāti Raukawa, Te Arawa, Ngāti Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Pākeha) for a raranga (weaving) workshop on Sat 12 October. You’ll learn how to make practical items like kete and rope from natural materials, locally sourced from te taio (the environment). Phil from Urban Ark will weave in (short) stories about each plant species used and place them in the context of our local environmental restoration activities and Rewa will teach you about their rongoa (medicinal) properties. Kawa kawa tea will be provided.

Rewa comes from a line of weavers and artists and has been teaching for 12 years. This free workshop is sponsored by Urban Ark and will be popular, so make sure you book early to reserve one of 10 limited spots.

Where: Top floor of Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre, 990 Great North Road.
Booking: RSVP [Enable JavaScript to view protected content]
Getting there: Several frequent bus services run along Gt North Rd. Visit AT’s Journey Planner.
Parking: Lock your bike to the railing right by the front door. There is loads of free car parking nearby, beside the Western Springs Garden community hall - the path to the venue is flat and we have a wheelchair ramp. Please do not park cars at the busy Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre car park.
