Maunga To Moana Walk, Waitītiko- Meola Creek Day 2: Waiōrea CRC to Te Tokaroa Meola Reef

Saturday 5 October 2024, 12:00pm - 3:30pm

Māori called this once pure stream Waitītiko, “the waters of the periwinkle”, but it has suffered as a result of urbanisation. As you walk, you’ll learn about the creek’s history including contemporary restoration attempts. Waitītiko-Meola Creek has a large urban catchment, the stream often submerged in culverts or confined to channels. Waitītiko flows into the Waitematā Harbour, then the Hauraki Gulf, ultimately connecting to the Pacific Ocean.

In this time of environmental degradation, we recognise that Waitītiko, like thousands of other waterways, links with the Pacific and beyond. Whether this connection worsens or improves the world’s oceans depends on us. There will be two guided walks which between them follow much of the course of Waitītiko.

Day 1 is from Ōwairaka / Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura / Mt Albert to Rocket Park; Day 2 covers Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre to Te Tokoroa Meola Reef. During these walks we’ll unpack the creek’s history and discuss future restoration plans.

Where meet at the tihi / summit of Ōwairaka / Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura / Mount Albert

Where meet upstairs at the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre, 990 Gt North Rd, Western Springs

When Saturday 5 October, 1pm

Tickets the walk is free but ticketed. Please book through Humanitix for Day 1 and/or Day 2

Getting there numerous buses run along Gt North Rd. Use AT Journey Planner to navigate to Stop 8124 or Stop 8125. There is bike parking at Waiōrea CRC. There is free parking beside Western Springs Garden Community Hall, 956 Gt North Rd.

Getting back plan your journey home from Te Tokaroa / Meola Reef, Rocket Park (Stop 1056). The walk back to Waiōrea CRC is 1.6km. We plan to have free vehicle shuttle available.

Bring dress for the weather including strong footwear. The walk is about 3km long, sometimes on rough ground, and you may need to walk back to your starting point.

Eric Armishaw Reserve weeding bee

Sunday 6 October 2024, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Eric Armishaw Reserve is a great little spot and one of the most biodiverse parks in Pt Chev. But that biodiversity also extends to weeds, which need a bit of attention. Come along to what we hope will be a regular series of weeding bees (and perhaps planting sessions). We have a few activities you can throw yourself into:

  • releasing trees from strangling vines
  • clearing woolly nightshade and moth plants
  • freeing up struggling natives trees and shrubs
  • hanging around and having a chat with other eco-focussed locals

Meet: at the southern end of the big boardwalk close to the motorway. Look for the Urban Ark flag.

Wear: something reasonably protective as you’ll be pushing through bushes and stuff, plus strong footwear (ideally waterproof) as it is likely to be damp underfoot

Bring: gloves (we’ll have spares), sunscreen, your favourite weeding tools, water bottle

RSVP: email [Enable JavaScript to view protected content] to let us know if you are coming

Raranga (weaving) Ecology workshop

Saturday 12 October 2024, 1:00pm - 4:00pm

Join Rewa Grimsdale (Te Atiawa, Ngāti Raukawa, Te Arawa, Ngāti Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Pākeha) for a raranga (weaving) workshop on Sat 12 October. You’ll learn how to make practical items like kete and rope from natural materials, locally sourced from te taio (the environment). Phil from Urban Ark will weave in (short) stories about each plant species used and place them in the context of our local environmental restoration activities and Rewa will teach you about their rongoa (medicinal) properties. Kawa kawa tea will be provided.

Rewa comes from a line of weavers and artists and has been teaching for 12 years. This free workshop is sponsored by Urban Ark and will be popular, so make sure you book early to reserve one of 10 limited spots.

Where: Top floor of Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre, 990 Great North Road.
Booking: RSVP [Enable JavaScript to view protected content]
Getting there: Several frequent bus services run along Gt North Rd. Visit AT’s Journey Planner.
Parking: Lock your bike to the railing right by the front door. There is loads of free car parking nearby, beside the Western Springs Garden community hall - the path to the venue is flat and we have a wheelchair ramp. Please do not park cars at the busy Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre car park.
